It’s a battle of spin and sludge. And are you going to believe the Interior Department or your interior judgement?

According to Donald Trump’s government, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is a “crystal clear” basin of water. “The nanobubbler technology and vacuuming have been incredibly effective, making the water crystal clear with the American Flag Blue coating shining brightly on the bottom of the pool,” the Department 

But on Thursday afternoon, a week into the ruckus over an algae bloom that began choking the pool soon after its renovation, the water was lagoon-green. Crews in waders used pool nets to scoop muck out of the two-tone pool, parts of which had become less green after workers poured bleach into the pool. Loud, whirring motors pumped the sickening-looking water into the storm drains.

And now, in addition to algae, sheets and ribbons of blue paint floated in the water or could be seen sloughing off as crews cleaned. Some pieces were left in the grass.

As Trump predicted, the renovation has brought crowds to the National Mall. But maybe not the ones he hoped.

Trump foes were out in force, drawn by massive media coverage of the renovation, which was completed after the administration awarded a 

The naysayers on hand included Rob Dale, a tourist from Colorado, who called the scene “a huge waste of resources.”

“Your tax dollars are literally going down the drain,” he said, motioning to the hose belching green water into the storm drain. He added: “I want my money back.”

But on Thursday, Dale said he was interviewed by Reuters. There were plenty of other media filing reports from the pool throughout the day, including reporters from 

. As Dale spoke, a cameraman with a CNN badge shot video. The fate of a D.C. monument had turned into a national symbol.

The renovation finished just over a week ago. Experts have said that it is common for algal blooms to strike after this kind of work, especially with the 

Yet even with all the remediation work, the water remained more chartreuse than “crystal clear.” And the only reflection occurring at the pool Thursday afternoon was from onlookers wondering how they would caption their blurry photos with metaphors about how this scene represents the state of the nation.

None of this stopped others from presenting a different reality. In another post, the Interior Department 

 that the “water is crystal clear, and our National Park Service team is now vacuuming up the bottom of some parts of the Reflecting Pool—just like the destroyed Iranian Navy resting on the bottom of the Persian Gulf.”

The political news site NOTUS has amicably resolved its legal dispute with the owners of 

 trademark, bringing to a close one of the weirder copyright battles in recent media history — and putting an end to a pricey and aborted relaunch. As part of the settlement, NOTUS has abandoned its plan to rebrand as

The legal battle began late last month, as NOTUS prepared a much-hyped relaunch as 

a general-interest Washington publication. The site’s owner, Robert Allbritton, is the son of a former owner of 

, which went out of business in 1981. Unfortunately for Allbritton, the old paper’s trademark is owned by someone else. And that owner 

 for trademark infringement, asking a judge to order NOTUS to stop using the name and pay damages. According to court filings, 

– led by Dovid Efune, the publisher of 

 – had been planning its own re-launch and two D.C. publications with Star in the name is bad for business.

“Both parties have amicably resolved the matter,” a NOTUS spokesperson said in a statement. “We continue to work toward a new name."

But the media companies decided to forgo the wait and take matters into their own hands.

NOTUS Scraps ‘The Star’ Rebrand, Ends Trademark Dispute 

President Donald Trump's name was removed from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts around 3 a.m. Saturday, hours after a federal judge's initial deadline.  

 of Trump’s name from the performing arts venue last month, ruling that the board acted unlawfully by renaming the institution without an act of Congress. He gave the board until end of day Friday to scrub references to him from the building’s facade, website and other official materials. The center appeared to be complying, wiping Trump’s name from its website earlier this week.

But Justice Department attorneys representing the center waged a final stand in the 36 hours before the court-ordered deadline. On Thursday night, they requested an extension of that deadline while the judge considered their appeal, arguing that removing the name, only to later replace it after a successful appeal, would be a waste of time and money.

When Cooper rejected that request Friday, the lawyers filed an emergency motion in an appeals court just before 4 p.m. once against requesting a delay, even as construction crews had already set up scaffolding near the sign. That didn’t work either. The center's one successful appeal was filed just before midnight Friday: lawyers requested until noon Saturday to complete the removal, citing rain delays.

Spokespeople for the White House and Kennedy Center did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Trump has yet to comment on the removal. 

Workers began putting up scaffolding by the Kennedy Center's facade Thursday morning. All throughout the day, onlookers crowded below the scaffolding, chanting “Take it off! Take it off!” 

Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Democratic congresswoman and Kennedy Center board member who sued over the renaming and closure, appeared outside the center Friday to thank spectators for their support.

“Every bit of the way there is going to be a legal fight so it means a lot to me that you are all here,” she told them. “The law is on our side.”

From the crowd Friday afternoon watched Bill Foster, 72, who worked at the Kennedy Center for nearly 35 years. He had been mourning the place to which he had dedicated decades, he said, and came to see what he called – for the first time in a long time – a glimpse of hope.

“The executive branch of our government has now killed the Kennedy Center. It is, in my opinion, dead,” Foster said. “I’m hoping that this is one small step toward rebuilding. We built it once, and we can build it again.”

Local drag performer Tara Hoot stood nearby, blowing bubbles from a bubble gun while clad in a pink wig, dress and boa. Hoot was among the drag queens who, 

 where Trump made his Kennedy Center debut. Hoot also demonstrates in front of the performing arts center every Friday as part of a group called Hands Off the Arts.

“It’s about time the courts are catching up with public opinion,” Hoot said Friday. “This is a memorial to an assassinated president, who would want to put their name in front of that?”

The anticipation lasted hours. At one point around 4 p.m., workers climbed to the top level of scaffolding, standing directly in front of the letters spelling out “Donald J. Trump.”

The crowd waited on bated breath, watching the construction crew’s every move. “I see a hammer!” one woman yelled. Others began chanting their gratitude toward the mostly Spanish-speaking crew. Then, the skies opened up, rain began pouring and the crew clambered back down to seek shelter.

Deb Baugh, a 71-year-old Watergate resident who called the center her “backyard”, said that in contrast to the removal, the sign’s installation was not as much of a “theatrical production.”

It took a couple men and an aerial work platform, or cherry picker, she said – not over a dozen workers spending hours building scaffolding. A spokesperson for the Kennedy Center did not immediately answer questions about the difference in construction projects.

Hundreds waited hours, through blazing heat and pouring rain, to see the sign's removal. But crews put a white tarp up surrounding the sign after midnight, obstructing the view from below. 

Inside the center that evening, visitors could still stop by the gift shop and purchase “The Trump Kennedy Center” merch: a t-shirt for $30, a quarter-zip for $75 and an embroidered tote bag for $78.

When asked whether there was a plan for the merchandise, the cashier shrugged. But, according to her, “they’re selling pretty fast so maybe they won’t even have to be removed.”

On a May evening in 1986, David Helvey was hanging out in a parking lot in Maryland before a Judas Priest show, leaning on a car and having a beer with friends. When two young guys with a Sony Trinicon video camera approached him, the 20-year-old, wearing aviators and a muscle tee, said that he was “ready to rock!”

Little did he know that he would become part of a colorful cast of characters featured in the zany 1986 underground rock documentary, 

 (He didn’t even discover the film until a friend showed it to him 17 years later.)

As Helvey walked into the film’s 40th anniversary screening this May, he still rocked a mullet. But instead of a beer, he held his artwork, lingering shame for his behavior on camera with a longtime family friend (he says he doesn't remember any of it and suspects they might have been egged on for the camera), and a matured appreciation for the good memories life can make. Helvey says he’s still baffled by the documentary’s cult status, but grateful for the community that’s come of it.

“Creating good memories are what we're going for,” said Helvey, now 60, who came in from Ocean City.

 is a mere 16 minutes and 41 seconds. But in it, local filmmakers Jeff Krulik and John Heyn pack in a whole lot of 1980s heavy metal fandom, drug- and beer-infused antics from young shirtless men, women with moussed-up hair, tight-fitting animal print of varying sorts, classic 1980s cars, 

, beer, and more beer – all in the parking lot of the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland before the English metal band Judas Priest and L.A. opener Dokken took center stage.

Despite first being released with little fanfare, the low-budget documentary eventually became an underground classic. Acclaimed Baltimore filmmaker John Waters 

 that it gave him the creeps. Actor Edward Norton, who grew up in Columbia, Md., 

Forty years to the day since metalheads partied in that parking lot, film fans of all ages, along with those who were curious yet unfamiliar, packed the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring for a sold-out screening and mini film reunion. The collective laughs, claps, and occasional gasps give a glimpse into the unique ways the film has aged and its enduring, special meaning in the region.

“We really captured lightning in a bottle,” said Heyn, 68.

Ryan Walker, 46, came to the screening with his bandmate. He recognized Helvey and walked up to introduce himself.

in the ‘90s, before the internet and going viral was a thing. He’d heard that Nirvana played it on their tour bus. So when he spotted the DVD at a used record store, he picked it up. He and his friends, who play music, found it funny and got really into it.

“We'd quote the lines to each other all the time,” he said.

Judy Grannas, 60, came for the nostalgia. She spent her twenties going to concerts at the Capital Centre. The indoor arena held a lot of big shows and was home to the Washington Bullets and the Washington Capitals before being demolished in 2002 and turned into a hospital complex.

“It’s a time capsule for what it was like for kids like us to go to live events, to see a band,” said Grannas.

For 29-year-old Megan Rouch, who hadn’t heard of the Capital Centre or the documentary before Sunday’s screening, the film still resonated — a relatable snapshot, she said, of youthful antics and fandom of any era (even though she calls herself more of a punk and pop head).

“I think it’s endearing how cringy it is because everyone is cringy at that age," she said.

 – the once wacky, intoxicated, shirtless guy in suspenders who fanboyed about Judas Priest’s bass player toward the end of the film – took in the screening by himself, sitting in the front row. He told 

 that for him, the evening was about remembering his best friend who passed away, whose youthful spirit is also captured in the film. 

Now more of a bluegrass guy, Ludwick, 62, has been off drugs and alcohol for years and runs a local violin shop and barbecue business.

“ It's a blessing to grow older, but there's something about reliving your past, even if it kind of has negative connotations,” said Ludwick. “It just makes you feel young again.”

 came about by pure chance, Krulik and Heyn said. Krulik, 25 at the time, worked at a local cable station and had unique access to a video recorder and microphone. 

The aspiring filmmakers had never been to a heavy metal concert before, let alone gone out tailgating. But the idea came to Heyn, then 28, “on a whim.” So off they went without prepared questions in mind, admittedly intimidated to step out of their car. As they started talking to people, they realized they’d struck gold.

The two premiered the film later that fall at 

, an alternative art and music venue. After a few years, they assumed the project had run its course. But the tape 

 through informal sharing and trading, then made its way to a legendary West Coast rental spot, Mondo Video Store, and eventually into the hands of celebrities and musicians.

Heyn only realized something was up years later, in 1994, when he said filmmaker Sofia Coppola called him out of the blue to ask if she could license some of the material for a Comedy Central pilot (why yes of course, he responded).

For those who’ve never heard of the documentary, you're not alone. It’s still pretty niche and mostly known among rock documentary aficionados. (The millennial reporter writing this very dispatch had not heard of the doc until moving to D.C. a few years ago.) As the years pass, the filmmakers also admit that some of the behaviors and attitudes may not have aged well.

But its cultural and regional value has only grown over time, according to

Laura Schnitker, an ethnomusicologist and lecturer at the University of Maryland who previously co-curated a 

“The words that film critics might use today would be ‘raw’ and ‘unflinching,’ because it’s not mediated the same way that documentaries about music typically are, where you have the talking heads and carefully curated content,” Schnitker told me. “Back then, you didn’t see that kind of thing that often… It might be on someone’s personal video collection, but Jeff and John had the audacity to release it.”

In a video before the screening, Judas Priest lead singer Rob Halford sent a surprise message. He told fans to continue the film’s legacy, inviting everyone to raise their “horns and fists to the fans, the filmmakers, the era – and the enduring spirit of 

. Still roaring. Still wild. Still metal. Oh, 

Krulik has continued to explore other D.C.-based bands and music scenes, both the widely influential (

 isn’t going away any time soon. He and Heyn hope to continue documenting the stories behind the film and the people connected to it.

“I want to know more about the people and the stories we haven’t heard,” Krulik said.

As the final fans trickled out, Helvey finished signing posters and paused, pensive and grateful.

“You know what we did today?" he said. “We created a good memory.”

Heavy Nostalgia at Heavy Metal Parking Lot’s 40th Anniversary 

Brendan Banfield, the Fairfax County man accused of plotting with his family’s au pair to impersonate his wife on a sexual fetish website to frame a stranger as her killer, was sentenced Friday to life without parole.

Judge Penney S. Azcarate handed down the harshest sentence possible, as Virginia abolished the death penalty in 2021.

“You should understand that you were found guilty of crimes that five short years ago would have carried a sentence of death,” Azcarate told Banfield. “Life in prison is a punishment reserved for a very small number of individuals – those whom the community has determined should never walk free again. It is a harsh sentence, but in this case it is a justified one.”

It marks the final legal chapter in a case that has commanded the attention of national media outlets, documentary producers and true-crime enthusiasts. In a letter from prison, the au pair wrote that Netflix offered her $10,000 for exclusive rights to her story.

Banfield, 41, was found guilty earlier this year of aggravated murder in the 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan. He was also convicted of a firearms offense and child endangerment, as his and Christine’s then-4-year-old daughter was in the basement of the Herndon home at the time of the murders.

The convictions followed a nearly month-long trial during which prosecutors painted Banfield as a man so deeply in love with the young Brazilian au pair that he orchestrated an elaborate plot to lure Ryan to his family’s Northern Virginia home under the pretense of a rough sex fantasy, shoot him, stab Christine, then frame Ryan as a violent intruder.

Prosecutors presented testimony from Banfield's former lover and au pair, 25-year-old Juliana Peres Magalhães, who corroborated their theory. She cut a plea deal, ensuring prosecutors would recommend her release as long as she cooperated with investigators and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. (The judge later disregarded the recommendation, sentencing her to 10 years in prison – the maximum for manslaughter in Virginia.)

The defense sought to discredit Magalhães’ testimony, using letters and messages she sent while incarcerated to paint her as a young, disillusioned woman who became willing to say anything for a chance at freedom. And when Banfield took the stand during trial, he emphatically denied any plan to harm his wife, calling the claim that he had concocted a catfishing plot “absolutely crazy.”

Banfield maintained his innocence until the very end. In his final words before being sentenced, he accused Ryan of fatally stabbing his wife and sought to portray himself as a loving husband.

“She truly was a caring mother, a caring wife, a loving nurse,” he said of Christine. “But I am not responsible for her death. This is not a knife that I ever held in my hand, and I never stabbed her.”

Azcarate eviscerated him before delivering the sentence. She said sentencing normally weighs heavily on her as people often make mistakes, act out of anger or have underlying struggles with substance abuse. But not this time, she said.

“To testify as you did shows the court that you still think that you are the smartest person in the room,” Azcarate said. “One would hope that some day you would become tortured by what you have done to Christine, Joe, Christine’s daughter and their families – but nothing that I have seen suggests that you will. The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case suggests something far deeper than anger or impulse. It reflects evil. Which is why I carry no burden and find no hesitation in sentencing you to life.”

In Fairfax County Circuit Court on Friday, members of Christine and Ryan’s families spoke publicly for the first time about the betrayal that cost the lives of their loved ones.

Danielle Hocker, Christine’s older sister, remembered the call that shattered her world, when her dad informed her husband that Christine had been killed – seemingly stabbed to death by a violent intruder who Banfield, a former IRS agent, shot in an attempt to save his wife.

But as the investigation continued, a more sinister story emerged: prosecutors believed Banfield and the au pair had conspired to impersonate Christine on a sexual fetish website. There, prosecutors say, they met Ryan, lured him to the Northern Virginia home under the pretense of a rough sex fantasy with Christine, killed them both, then framed Ryan as her attacker.

As the family learned more, the life they thought they knew was cast into doubt. Hocker remembered the Saturday in October 2022 when she traveled to Fairfax County to spend the day with her mother, sister and niece doing fun Halloween activities. She didn’t know at the time that her brother-in-law spent that day at a gun range teaching Magalhães how to shoot.

“When I learned this, I went numb,” she testified. “I felt in some way I had been used to facilitate what happened because I didn’t recognize the signs. Since then, I have replayed countless moments, fixating on small details and convincing myself I should have noticed something – there must have been a clue that I missed.”

“I didn’t truly know Brendan at all,” she said. “I don’t believe anyone did – not friends, not family and certainly not Christine."

Hocker recalled childhood memories: evenings spent with her younger sister watching Full House, the time Christine fell asleep at a New Kids On The Block concert, and Christine’s obsession with “Legends of the Fall.” She said she was not surprised by Christine’s choice to become a nurse – she had always been reliable, selfless and caring.

Deirdre Fisher, Ryan’s mother, spoke lovingly of her son – urging the public to remember him as a complete person, not just a pawn in Banfield’s scheme. She spoke of his devotion to caring for sick family members, his volunteering to teach jiu-jitsu to children with autism, his work at a local homeless shelter and his love for animals.

“Joe was a guy who believed in fighting for the underdog, and even actual neglected dogs,” Fisher said, chuckling at the memory through tears. “He would walk into an animal shelter and ask for the oldest, ugliest dogs, bring them home and love them for years. When Joe was murdered, he left behind a dog named Kitty who waited for him at the top of the stairs.”

Family members, prosecutors and the judge all emphasized the premeditated nature of the crime in their remarks Friday, with Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Kelsey Gill calling the killings calculated “executions” and reminding the judge that no matter the sentence, grief endures.

“I am asking you to impose every minute of active incarceration that the law requires and that the law allows,” Gill said. “The sun should never shine on Mr. Banfield’s skin as a free man ever again.”

Man Who Plotted with Au Pair to Kill Wife, Stranger Sentenced to Life in Prison

A federal judge has blocked political news site NOTUS from rebranding as 

Judge Rossie D. Alston Jr. granted a temporary restraining order in a trademark lawsuit brought by 

 against NOTUS, finding that readers are likely to be confused by the similar names.

In U.S. District Court on Tuesday, Alston ordered NOTUS to halt plans to unveil a new website Wednesday and also forbade the publication from advertising the rebrand until he determined whether a preliminary injunction would be appropriate. He stopped short of requiring NOTUS to remove all existing references to 

A hearing on the preliminary injunction is scheduled for July 22, court records show. A spokesperson for NOTUS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At the crux of the lawsuit lies a single question: will the names cause confusion?

argues yes, citing news articles and social media posts that conflate 

launch with the revival of D.C.’s long-defunct conservative-leaning daily newspaper. NOTUS argues no, pointing to a survey it commissioned of consumers who read U.S. politics news. The survey found none of them thought 

. Plus, lawyers for NOTUS argued, “Star” has been used in hundreds of newspaper names dating back decades.

In court Tuesday, lawyers for each publication argued they had more to lose. Lawyers for NOTUS noted the publication had spent $1.3 million on pre-paid advertising through July, in addition to the millions of dollars already invested into the new website, sponsorships, advertisement and launch events. Attorneys for 

 claimed that allowing NOTUS to rebrand would kill the newspaper’s revival before it truly began.

“If you allow them to rebrand, we’re dead,” said Laurin Mills, a lawyer representing 

NOTUS, owned by D.C. media mogul Robert Allbritton, announced its plans to expand coverage and rebrand as 

 last month. Many figured that the name was an homage to his family’s former ownership of 

– a paper that stopped printing in 1981.

began posting articles on Substack weeks after NOTUS announced its expansion, ending a 45-year publishing drought. Lawyers for NOTUS seized on 

’s inactivity as evidence its claim to the trademark was weak, pointing out that 

 existed only as a single webpage with links to third-party reporting until after NOTUS announced its rebrand.

In a statement Tuesday, Efune welcomed the ruling and reinforced his commitment to resurrecting the newspaper as the ideological counterweight to left-leaning D.C. publications.

"This ruling reinforces our focus on what matters most: reviving a legendary American institution and returning a much needed voice in our nation's capital," the statement read. "We invite the public and especially disenfranchised readers in Washington and beyond to join us in this effort."

Court filings also offered an inside look into the communications between the two publications leading up to the legal battle.

A buyer on behalf of NOTUS first approached 

r on March 2, court records show, offering to purchase the trademark for $5,000. Robert Garson, an attorney for The Washington Star, replied that Efune valued the name at $10 million. (Garson represented President Donald Trump in an unsuccessful $50 million lawsuit against ex-

As negotiations continued, the buyer disclosed that she was working on behalf of Allbritton and explained his family connection to 

but added that he had already secured the rights to multiple other names the paper could use if unable to reach a deal. Ultimately, on March 24, court records show NOTUS offered $50,000 for the name. Efune rejected the offer.

Another NOTUS representative – this time the CEO of an Arlington-based private investment firm – reached out the next day, records show, requesting a meeting with Efune. In a declaration filed in court, Efune said he and the representative spoke about the two publications potentially partnering. The representative even proposed a name trade, Efune said: 

 — a name NOTUS had already applied to trademark.

But the deal once again fell apart as Efune remained insistent that the trademark was worth millions.

“We see great value in this historic title, both in terms of overall recognition in the market and also the specific strong and valuable brand identity going all the way back to 1850,” Efune wrote in an April 6 email included in court filings. “I’m sure you also know of its storied history as Ronald Reagan’s favorite newspaper. We genuinely view this value to be well into the millions…”

In a court filing, attorneys for NOTUS said the acronym, short for “News of the United States”, has proven inaccessible and distracting to the broader audience beyond political insiders the news organization is now trying to reach. 

 is the antidote for the confusion, the attorneys wrote, because “Star” has been associated with news organizations for over 100 years. Notably, the explanation of the name choice does not mention the Allbritton family’s ownership of the defunct 

“The name also fit NOTUS’ ethos, as THE STAR represents the ‘north star of journalism,’ which is to be non-partisan and accurate,” the attorneys wrote.
