There's so much more happening on 9th Street NW besides bars and nightlife (though we’ve got plenty of that). The strip is known as D.C.’s “Little Ethiopia” and is packed with great food, drinks, and energetic vibes.

First, Coffee:

The closest coffee shop is Compass Coffee one block over, but 1914 by Kolben has Vietnamese coffee and milk teas for take away. For something more wholesome Turning Naturals has all the juices, sea mosses, and smoothies you could ever desire.

What To Eat:

Habesha Market is a tucked-away Ethiopian spot serving some of the best and cheapest platters in town. They’re also stocked on hard-to-find Ethiopian ingredients. Ambassador down the block has slightly more elevated Ethiopian fare. For something different, Smoki Kabob’s has decent Afghani food and a nice dining area.

What To Do:

Spend time basking in the greenery at the REWILD plant shop — I dare you to leave empty-handed. Grab tickets to a concert at the always-crowded DC9, or head to the other side of the block and check out the African American Civil War Museum. If you’re of the 420 persuasion, check out Mr. Nice Guy or one of the many cannabis stores on 9th Street NW.

Where To Drink:

Nellie’s Sports Bar is a classic choice for throwbacks and rooftop dancing. Service Bar makes some of the best cocktails in town but gets crowded. MK Lounge has hookahs and bottle service. I’ve never been, but Tiny Tiki Bar is on my list of spots to try, with its impressive cocktail flourishes.
