Hyattsville is criminally overlooked (at least to many of us in NW), but it’s a hub of art studios, vintage shops, and comfort food gems. I could easily spend a whole afternoon poking around different shops, coffee in tow (and frequently do). If you’re thinking about making the trip, here’s where to get started.
First, Coffee:
Vigilante Coffee alone is worth the trip to Hyattsville. They roast their own beans and you can choose what kind you want. They also serve bagels, baked goods, and smoothie bowls. The vibe is top-notch. Last time I was there, they had a free linocut printmaking station.
What To Do:
Hyattsville is for the thrifters and the artists. Around the corner from Vigilante is My Dead Aunt’s Books, a used book and antique store with a large collection of colorful glassware and dining sets (my aunt’s still kicking, thanks for asking). Pyramid Atlantic Art Center has a shop selling local art, a gallery, a library, and a huge studio space open to the public.
A couple of minutes' drive will land you at my best-kept secret, Community Forklift — a nonprofit reuse warehouse with everything from lumber to vintage furniture. If you need 30 toilet seats, this is your best bet.

What To Eat:
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention 2Fifty Texas BBQ’s original Hyattsville location, serving up the best BBQ in the DMV (if you ask me). But there is no lack of good options. Le Fantome food hall is a fan favorite with everything from fried chicken to sushi bowls. Suga & Spice serves up huge, comforting plates of Caribbean food.
My go-to is Between the Bread Cafe. Everything is cheap, and it feels like your mom is packing your school lunch. Get the Reuben and sweet potato pudding.
Where To Drink:
I hope you like beer. Your best bet is to head to Denizens Brewing Co. and grab a flight of their seasonal offerings. Streetcar 82 Brewing down the street serves up some tight competition though and often has food trucks and live music. Non-beer drinkers can check out Maryland Meadworks a minute down the road which has a cozy atmosphere and lots of non-abv options.
