Nestled between Catholic University and the edge of Maryland, Brookland is surprisingly lively. I find myself going back often for a walk at the Franciscan Monastery, to browse art galleries, or check out my favorite farmers market in the city. There are plenty of ways to spend a day there, but here’s where I would start.
First, Let’s Grab Coffee:
Cool Coffee has cultivated a cult following. The sustainability-focused cafe has smooth espresso, a cozy upstairs for working, and reasonable prices. The pastries here are decent but the real move is to grab some breakfast tacos from La Cocina down the block. If you find yourself on the east side of Brookland, there is a Zeke’s Coffee with strong dark coffee and neighborhood vibes.
What To Do:
If you haven’t been, do yourself a favor and get over to the Franciscan Monastery. The grounds include a stunning church, catacombs, and gardens filled with Roman and Middle Eastern religious shrine replicas. It truly feels otherworldly. Or, wander the shops at the Brookland Arts Walk. Artists are often there working and are happy to chat about their projects. It's especially fun on Saturdays when the street fills up with vendors for the Monroe Street Farmers Market.
What To Eat:
I am a huge sucker for all-day breakfast and it doesn’t get more classic than Murry & Paul’s. They’re cash only and the pancakes are as big as your head. (Go early on weekends to get a table though!) For the complete opposite vibe, Primrose is an adorable French bistro that serves rotating dishes made with local produce, natural wines, and artful desserts. And if you happen to be there on a Saturday, make a beeline to Lei Musubi at the Monroe Street Farmers Market for a Hawaiian-style rice ball. I dream of these often.

What To Drink:
This mostly residential neighborhood doesn’t lend itself to a heavy bar culture, but the Right Proper Brewing Company strikes the perfect balance. Tucked away by the train tracks, they serve beers brewed on-site in a cozy bar space complete with a piano. Cross the tracks into Edgewood, and you’ll find fan-favorite (and my personal top dive bar in D.C.) Dew Drop Inn. Go for a witchy night party, the queer film club, or one of the hundred other community events. I mean, they won best gathering place at the RAMMY’s this year for a reason!
