Hill East is a new name for an old neighborhood that sits between Capitol Hill and the Anacostia river. It’s mainly residential with a few local trusted spots, but recently the new food hall “The Roost” has been drawing in more nonresidents. Here’s how to spend the perfect day in the quiet picturesque neighborhood.
First, Coffee:
Start your day with a coffee and homemade pretzel at The Pretzel Bakery. Get the breakfast sandwich on a pretzel roll or the Pretzel Bomb, which is filled with Nutella and topped with salt. For some more artisanal caffeine head to Cameo, which has gorgeous espresso drinks with homemade syrups, along with croissants from Pluma Bakery.
What To Eat:
Mangialardo's is a local landmark and has been serving up authentic Italian subs made to order since 1953. Try the notorious Big G with ham, salami, mortadella, and pepperoni. Next door, Hill East Burger has some of the best burgers in D.C. and a drool-worthy house sauce. For more carbs, Caruso’s Grocery (connected to The Roost) serves up out-of-this-world Italian-American fare.

What To Do:
Wander around the Congressional Cemetery and dog watch to your heart’s content. Or attend one of their Death Doula days that have special guests each week. Maybe even participate in its Tombs and Tomes book club or one of their many other events.
