Old Town Alexandria can feel far, but it’s really only 20 minutes away from D.C., and it’s the perfect day trip in fall when foliage is at its peak.

First, Coffee:

Your first stop has to be Misha’s Coffee. They roast their own beans. The City Roast is wonderful. Also, don’t miss out on their phenomenal chocolate chip cookies. For something slightly different, go to the Turkish Coffee Lady across the street for traditional Turkish coffee and baklava.

What To Do:

Take your coffee to the Torpedo Factory Art Center. It’s home to 71 studios – the country’s largest collection of working artists’ open studios under one roof. Studios range from painting and ceramics to jewelry and fiber arts. Alternatively, go on a Saturday morning and peruse the legendary Old Town farmers market.

What To Eat:

The noodles at Yunnan by Potomac are unbeatable. They are thick Mixian-style noodles, which are hard to come by in D.C. If you want a view, try out BARCA Pier & Wine Bar, which is literally on the water and serves tapas-style small plates and cocktails.

Where To Drink:

Casa Luna is an intimate craft cocktail bar with a subtle entrance and creative menu. For something casual, try Old Hat Bar, a neighborhood standby complete with tennis rackets hanging on the wall.
