My last home in Washington, D.C. was in this cozy neighborhood sandwiched between Bloomingdale, Shaw, and NoMa. Bordered by New Jersey Avenue NW, Florida Avenue NW, and New York Avenue NW, the community features beautiful late 19th-century houses and historical schools, such as the original Dunbar High School, which was the first public high school for Black students in the U.S.

It’s a small neighborhood with a big personality. Here are some of the spots I loved frequenting.

This was my go-to spot for a cup of coffee and a chocolate chip cookie. But this cafe on North Capitol Street NW is more than just a bakery — they’ve got amazing sandwiches, like my favorite, the Embassy of Turkey.

Head south on North Capitol Street NW for a view of some cool murals behind an apartment complex on Hanover Place NW.

I used to live around the corner from this woman-owned wine shop on Florida Avenue NW, which “Wine Enthusiast” magazine named one of the top natural wine shops in the U.S.

When you’re ready for happy hour and dinner, this Tex-Mex spot on N Street NW is a delicious way to end your day. Some of my favorite dishes include their Queso Compuesto, their Taco Norteño, and of course, the Agave Frozen Marg.
