Located above Columbia Heights, 16th Street Heights used to be an enormous plant nursery and is now one of the most diverse neighborhoods in D.C. It is stacked with weird local art and incredible casual restaurants.

First, Coffee

Baltimore-born coffee roaster Zeke’s opened a new location in 16th Street Heights with stellar traditional espresso drinks. But if you are looking for a true neighborhood hangout, check out Gold Coast Café & Mart and linger with the locals over a breakfast sandwich and a piece of cake.

What To Do

Check out the Graffiti Museum on 14th Street NW, an outdoor street art museum created by local artists, then wander the art strewn alleys nearby. They also offer free tours every Sunday. Or stop by Turtle Park for one of their events and sick playground.

What To Eat

Grab chicken and waffles from neighborhood stalwart Highlands. For more of a pub feel, check out Moreland’s Tavern, another local joint with incredible crab cakes and fried green tomatoes. Or douse yourself in sangria and paella at Atxondo.

What To Drink

The Neptune Room is a dive-y neighborhood spot that boasts colorful Christmas lights all year round, kitschy maritime decor, and drinks under $10. For dancing, The Bull Bar regularly hosts live DJs and musicians and has the best onion rings in town.
