D.C. looooves bikeshare. We have the most ridership per capita in the country. The city now has over 7,000 e-bikes, owned by multiple apps, scattered around D.C. But which one’s the best? Which is the cheapest? Most importantly, which one will turn your commute into a Star Wars pod race? I tried all of them to find out.

These bikes are super light: just pedal and you’ll fly! Lime has the largest fleet of e-bikes, with 3,025 across the DMV, and you can use the Uber app to book.

Capital Bikeshare is the most economical option by far. While the sleek new silver models are well made and sturdy, they are a little heavy, which can make them difficult to maneuver.

Their Cosmo-E model, despite having pedals, is throttle-powered! These bikes are a blast and perfect for anyone who's ever wanted to cosplay Easy Rider but is too scared to ride a real motorcycle. I can almost hear “Born to be Wild” just thinking about it.
The Verdict
The beauty of D.C.’s saturated e-bike market is that there’s something for everyone. Biking on a budget? Capital Bikeshare is the way to go. Want to pretend you’re in Sons of Anarchy? VEO’s perfect for you. Regardless, all are a fun alternative to calling an Uber or trudging to the Metro.
When Should You Buy Your Own E-Bike?
Heavy usage plus an annual fee on any of the apps could easily run you over $1000 a year, plenty for a down payment on an e-bike. The past two years, DDOT ran the District E-Bike Incentive Program in the spring which provides rebates for e-bike purchases also.
