Were the Robberies at the Chinatown Walgreens an Inside Job?

00:00:00

The Chinatown Walgreens was hit by armed robbers eight times last year, all likely committed by the same family. Yesterday, it was revealed that not just one, but two store managers may have been in on the heists.

Last week, police charged manager Michael Leroy Robinson, who was on duty for at least four of the robberies, with being involved in the scheme. They’ve also arrested his 26-year-old nephew, Gianni Robinson, and Kamanye Williams, 24, who the Walgreens security guard shot during an attempted robbery on Feb. 11. (The play-by-play of this investigation is wild, by the way.)

Now, federal prosecutors allege that Gianni Robinson was also working with a fourth suspect, his live-in partner, who was also a manager at the Chinatown Walgreens.

Prosecutors allege that the group facilitated near-monthly robberies of the convenience store that added up to nearly $30,000.

This comes just as D.C. is rolling out a huge anti-crime push in Chinatown, even setting up a new police substation and office at 675 H St. NW.

David Sundberg, who works at the FBI’s Washington Field Office, told the Washington Post that the robbers “may have targeted this one business, but their actions affect the whole neighborhood.”
