It’s tax season — *sigh*
The deadline to file your 2024 personal income tax return is April 15. You can file through the IRS website or go to MyTax.DC.gov for city filing. The process can be confusing to understand, and while tax prep services can be helpful, some are expensive and others are complete scams.
Here are trusted organizations helping Washingtonians file taxes on time for no cost:
DC Public Library
The DCPL is hosting in-person income tax return preparation sessions all the way until April 15. Check the calendar to find an appointment time that works for you and bring in all your tax documents.
AARP
Although its mission is focused on assisting populations over the age of 65, AARP helps anyone needing help filing taxes. You can find AARP’s partner sites using this locator tool.
Prince George Community College
The college sets you up with an IRS-certified volunteer tax preparer to prepare your tax forms. This service is for low to moderate-income individuals anywhere in the DMV.
TerpTax
A non-profit affiliated with UMD, this site provides tax help videos and detailed instructions for how to file yourself. They also provide appointments both in person and asynchronous to all low to mid-income individuals including non residents or citizens of Mexico and Canada.
Military On Source
This free tax filing service is for service members and their spouses. The tax consultants and tax prep services specifically address deployments, multi-state filings, and other military specific tax issues.
Uniting People With Opportunities
For those who make under $58k/year UPO has the largest free tax prep program in Ward 8 and the second largest in D.C. It provides free filing services, one-on-one counseling, and financial literacy workshops.
