Anyone else a sucker for interactive maps? Here are some of my favorite maps of D.C. I have collected over the years that parse the city along different historical, social, and activity-based lines.
Perhaps the cutest of them all, this tool maps those birdhouse-style libraries people erect in their front yard and fill with free books. Take a book, leave a book, or just browse.
This story map exhibits Black D.C. residents' displacement over the 20th century as communities were pushed into the city’s least developed sections. It depicts the effects of racially restrictive housing covenants and other discriminatory policies that can still be seen today.
Includes Capital Bikeshare stations, bike lanes, bike routes, trails, and safety information. I use this to map my way around the city using just bike lanes to stay safe.
This maps where all the cherry trees are located in D.C. As in, it maps every. Single. Tree.
For when you get burnt out from zoom calls and happy hours, this map includes places where introverts in D.C. can be themselves – alone and silently at peace. The best part is most of them are outside, perfect for this week.
An interactive map that marks hundreds of places that D.C. residents are grateful for, from parks and museums to restaurants and bars.
