New Year’s events in D.C. can get out-of-hand expensive, and on top of that, they’re often underwhelming. Here is our list of NYE celebrations — for every type of person and budget — that are actually worth the cover.
For Those Going to Bed At 10 p.m.
Just be honest with yourself and pick something more your speed 😉metrobar is hosting a day party with live DJs along with a family-friendly New Year's. Or head to The Yards for “Noon Yards Eve” with bouncy houses and a balloon drop at noon. Sleepyheads (me) can also enjoy a 90s-themed cocktail tasting at the newly opened Press Club or catch the early showing of DC Improv’s New Year's Eve Showcase.
For Something More Queer
Head to New Queer’s Eve, the most sapphic NYE party in the city, complete with tarot readings and all-gold attire. Capital Pride Alliance is also hosting a Rainbow Masquerade which includes live drag and an open bar.

For When You’re Cashing In That Bonus ($100+)
It is easy to spend upwards of $100 on an NYE event in D.C. Some parties that are actually worth it include Silver Lyan’s "house party" with bottomless Champagne, the immersive pop-up bar Snowglow atop Union Market, and this Gatsby-esque NYE yacht party.
For Something Justtt Right ($50 or less)
There’s no need to spend an arm and a leg to have a great time. Lapop (under Lapis) is having an international disco dance party with craft cocktails. Or, bring the bros to Sauf House for a complimentary toast on the roof deck. For dancing, Eighteenth Street Lounge will have two floors of all-night DJ’s. And Purple Patch is having karaoke and unlimited beer and wine.
For When You Have Zero Moneys ($0)
You won’t get all the open bars and free canapés, but there are plenty of free options to choose from. Wunder Garten has a heated patio with a spacious dance floor and hot cocoa. And First Night Alexandria will have free music and dance performances down King Street with a fireworks display at midnight.
