August is a popular time for people to escape the swamp, but real ones know this is one of the best months to be in D.C. Here are some of our reasons to stick around.
D.C.’s favorite Takoma house turned DIY art space, Rhizome, will move to its new Georgia Ave location at some unconfirmed point in the future. So this could be your last chance to catch a show at its legendary location that the Washington Post called “the best venue in the city.” Check out a show, a modular synth group meet up, or a fermented foods workshop.
You can also check out Maryland’s Hamlin Street Diner if folksy house shows are more your style.
Keep the Oven Off
Using your oven can raise your kitchen temperature up to ten degrees. That’s a big no-no in D.C.’s August heat. Instead, hit one of D.C.’s many farmer’s markets and throw together a bright, no-cook meal. (Preferably one covered in olive oil and flaky salt.) I’m talking capreses, smoothie bowls, and tomato sandwiches.
If you’d rather stay out of the kitchen all together, Summer Restaurant Week starts Aug. 18.

Beth A. Wolfe Yoga is hosting a multi-sensory yoga flow and sound bath experience at the National Building Museum on Aug. 10 with Liat Pisco, sound practitioner and owner of Yoga Del Rey. Admire the museum’s 75-foot-tall Corinthian columns as you perfect your triangle pose.
Escape the heat at five new Air and Space museum exhibits, part of the museum’s massive $1B renovation at work. Plus, their IMAX theater has reopened, if you need to see the new Fantastic Four or some random movie about dinosaurs.
Take a fantastical leap of faith this August at a Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo pop-up at Lost Generation Brewing. For $75, roll the 20-sided dice and get whichever D&D flash tattoo correlates to the number you rolled. Roll a perfect 20 and choose your own adventure.
Maybe you get the princess, maybe you get the dragon.
