Meet the City Cast DC Team

There’s a lot to love about DC. The region is full of devoted natives who call it home, but it’s also a hub for newcomers from across the country and around the world. The city’s many contradictions have created an opinionated, engaged, and lively community. Every day, you’ll hear from the team highlighting what makes this beautiful, complex city we call home just a little bit better. Get in touch with us at dc@citycast.fm.

A DC hidden gem:

The MLK Library reopened during the pandemic. It’s the only Mies van der Rohe building in DC, and it was always a grim, gloomy place—a building that didn’t much like people. But they reimagined it beautifully. And there’s a gorgeous roof deck in the middle of downtown where you can sit for free.

Someone from DC you should know about:

Darrow Montgomery. He’s spent 30-odd years documenting the city as a photographer for Washington City Paper. If DC had a photographer laureate, it would be him.

DC personality you need to know:
George “the Music Man” Whitlow personifies DC’s musical spirit.

Let’s eat here:

Tiger Fork, in Blagden Alley. The Jah Leung there blows my mind.

Something DC does better than anywhere else:

Parks! Almost every neighborhood has one. And as a tree enthusiast I am particularly pleased by the many, gorgeous trees to climb on top of, hammock between, or picnic beneath.

Let’s eat here:

Bread Furst in Van Ness. Let’s grab a baguette, a croissant, or sneakily my favorite thing there, a ham and cheese biscuit sandwich. Iced coffee too!

DC does this better than anywhere else:
Book stores. Each has its own character and they’re constantly hosting events with writers.

DC personality you need to know:

Eliza Scidmore – She was the first woman on National Geographic’s board and was the one who proposed bringing cherry blossoms to Potomac Park.

A DC hidden gem:

Sidamo on H Street — super good Ethiopian coffee at a homey cafe.

DC does this better than anywhere else:
Thrifting in the surrounding DMV suburbs is the best in the country!

DC tourist trap that's actually great:
Late-night oyster happy hour at the Old Ebbitt Grill. Perfect time to also visit the monuments when they are not crowded.
